Soft Pastels

When I use soft pastels I find it to be freeing and expressive. Pastels can set mood and atmosphere quickly. The medium has boundaries of color layering though, depending on the tooth of the paper only a certain amount of color can be applied. However, the paper color can be used as a headstart for the overall feel of the painting.


The soft blending affect of pastels combined with more bold strokes of color varies the compositional sense of focus. The viewer's eye is attracted to prominent strokes and finds rest in the softer areas of the image.
